Stranraer House was built in 1970 through the generosity of the late John Patrick Thomson (from Stranraer, Scotland) and his wife, the late Nellie Thompson. Stranraer House is an iconic institution located in the heart of Sydenham, Durban. It is a registered NPO that has provided a home away from home for elderly women for over 50 years.
In 2021, a new Chairman, Board of Trustees, and Management Committee were appointed to lead the home toward a more sustainable future. Since then, we have implemented many money-saving measures including a R355 000 solar system generously donated to us. We make use of Jo-Jo tanks for more efficient water management and have a food garden for our kitchen. We also have plans to have a borehole installed which will assist with our goal to reduce our monthly costs.
